In Progress – #38 – Make our own beer

Adam’s brother Erik made a surprise trip up to visit last weekend, so it seemed the perfect time to start brewing our beer.  We had a kit Adam got from my parents last year, so off we went.  Our little brew is currently chilling out in our closet, next step is bottling on the 9th!

Details: Brooklyn Brew Shop can be found here.  The kit we used is also available from Indigo, found here.

In Progress – #53 – Find our favourite mac’n’cheese in Toronto

We started this one way back in February; check out this post to get the explanation about our super serious mac’n’cheese grading system.  Since then, we’ve had three more contenders; Harbord House, Indie Ale House and Czehoski.  It’s worth noting after doing an early score tally, that the mac’n’cheese currently with the highest score isn’t necessarily the one we’d say is our favourite, so we are clearly not consistent or very good at his grading system!

First up, Harbord House.  We used to go here a lot when we had some friends who lived next door, and I’d always get the mac’n’cheese, so we put it on the list.  It’s got cheddar, jack, parm and ermite cheese and comes with a nice side salad.  The night we went it had more sauce than usual, which made the blue cheese pretty strong, but usually it isn’t as overpowering.

Harbord House is on Harbord at Brunswick.  Hours and menus can be found here.

Next up was Indie Ale House, which opened fairly recently in our neighbourhood.  There was a fairly spirited debate about their mac’n’cheese in the comments of a BlogTO review (found here), so on the list it went!

It was pretty good, but didn’t blow me away, and I didn’t order it again when we went back.Image
Indie Ale House is on Dundas West, just west of Keele.  Hours and menus can be found here.

Last night we were at Czehoski’s to celebrate the birthday of one of our dearest friends, and took the opportunity to try the mac’n’cheese (this one made most, if not all the best-of lists we referenced, found in this post).  I had the highest hopes for this one and it didn’t let me down, super tasty.  And, because we were chatting, we ate half of it cold, and it was still delicious.Image
Czehoski’s is on Queen West at Tecumseh.  Hours and menus can be found here.

#98 – Purge our apartment of anything we do not know to be useful or beautiful

Oops, definitely thought we were done the mundane household list items back in August when we finished organizing our closets.  We’ve spent a fair amount of time purging our apartment of excess stuff and after two trips to Goodwill, 4 giant garbage bags of clothing donations, and innumerable trips to our apartment dumpster, I think we did it (at least for now).

#95 – Dress up for a fancy night out

We are way more comfortable in jeans and t-shirts than being dressed up, so getting fancy for a night made it on the list.  Of course, as these things go, 2013 ended up being the year for love, and we went to eight weddings, so were dressed up a fair amount this year.

It was my birthday this weekend, which also happened to be the same day Adam flew to Paris for a business trip, so we celebrated last week at my favourite place; Cafe Belong.  We ordered the vegetarian communal menu again, and it was just as delicious as earlier in the year.  This post is supposed to be about us getting dressed up, but I’ve included photos of the food because, let’s face it, it’s way prettier than we are!

I can never say enough about Cafe Belong; the food, the service and the drinks are always exceptional!

Bonus #6 – Go to Chicago

We spent the past weekend outside Chicago celebrating with Adam’s brother Erik and our new sister-in-law Sam at their beautiful wedding.  We were able to steal a little bit of time in the city; exploring Lincoln Park Zoo, visiting Millennium Park & Cloud Gate (the Bean!), eating deep dish pizza and browsing a great record store.

Adam has been to Chicago before, and it was my first time there.  Adam was already a fan, and I really, really liked it.  We had an amazing time exploring, and are looking forward to going back soon.  First on our list is to find some truly delicious deep dish; the stuff we had just wasn’t that great, but Adam has had better in the past, so we know it is out there!

#40 – Go bowling

We love, love, love it when our friends and family ask to help us cross something off our list.  So when Adam’s brother Erik, and his new wife Sam, carved time out of their wedding weekend to go bowling with us, we were pretty thrilled.

We had a great time bowling (especially after the judge-y 8 year-old in the next lane left), and it was especially nice to spend time with Erik and Sam since they live so far away.

Details: We went to Brunswick Zone in Naperville (outside Chicago), hours and details can be found here.
