#38 – In Progress – Make our own beer

We started brewing our beer two weeks ago, and today we bottled it.  We don’t have many photos of the process as it took all four hands to siphon the beer into the pot with the honey, and then from the pot into the bottles.

The beer will be ready just in time for a Christmas taste test!

In Progress – #38 – Make our own beer

Adam’s brother Erik made a surprise trip up to visit last weekend, so it seemed the perfect time to start brewing our beer.  We had a kit Adam got from my parents last year, so off we went.  Our little brew is currently chilling out in our closet, next step is bottling on the 9th!

In Progress – #53 – Find our favourite mac’n’cheese in Toronto

We started this one way back in February; check out this post to get the explanation about our super serious mac’n’cheese grading system.  Since then, we’ve had three more contenders; Harbord House, Indie Ale House and Czehoski.  It’s worth noting after doing an early score tally, that the mac’n’cheese currently with the highest score isn’t necessarily the one we’d say is our favourite, so we are clearly not consistent or very good at his grading system!

First up, Harbord House.  We used to go here a lot when we had some friends who lived next door, and I’d always get the mac’n’cheese, so we put it on the list.  It’s got cheddar, jack, parm and ermite cheese and comes with a nice side salad.  The night we went it had more sauce than usual, which made the blue cheese pretty strong, but usually it isn’t as overpowering.

Harbord House is on Harbord at Brunswick.  Hours and menus can be found here.

Next up was Indie Ale House, which opened fairly recently in our neighbourhood.  There was a fairly spirited debate about their mac’n’cheese in the comments of a BlogTO review (found here), so on the list it went!

It was pretty good, but didn’t blow me away, and I didn’t order it again when we went back.Image
Indie Ale House is on Dundas West, just west of Keele.  Hours and menus can be found here.

Last night we were at Czehoski’s to celebrate the birthday of one of our dearest friends, and took the opportunity to try the mac’n’cheese (this one made most, if not all the best-of lists we referenced, found in this post).  I had the highest hopes for this one and it didn’t let me down, super tasty.  And, because we were chatting, we ate half of it cold, and it was still delicious.Image
Czehoski’s is on Queen West at Tecumseh.  Hours and menus can be found here.

Progess Report

We haven’t been accomplishing much off our list the last few weeks as we have been getting ready to leave today on the big one, #33; go to South Africa. We will be spending a couple days in Cape Town, and then doing an eight day camping safari which starts at Victoria Falls in Zambia, runs through Kruger National Park and ends in Johannesburg.  We are so excited about the adventure ahead of us and everything we will be experiencing.

We have completed 12 things off our list, have about 4 in progress, so with 42 weeks left of the year, we will need to knock off an average of 2 per week.  So while the next couple weeks are going to be amazing, the rest of the year will be pretty full as well!

See you on the other side!

In Progress – #53 – find our favourite mac’n’cheese in Toronto

This one got added to the list due to an intense Mac’n’cheese phase I was going through early January, so adding it to the list somehow legitimized that.  We obviously will not be spending every weekend eating Mac’n’cheese, so we choose our contenders based on the following lists and friend recommendations.  If a restaurant was on a list or recommended at least twice, we’ll give it a go, which leaves us with about 3 or 4 contenders (thankfully, since the intense mac’n’cheese phase has passed, and there’s only so much I can eat!).

The lists we are working with are;

BlogTO’s Best Mac’n’Cheese in Toronto (2010), found here.’s Best Mac’n’Cheese in Toronto (2012), found here.

NOW’s Mac Attack list (2007), found here.

Luckily, I have a judging partner on this one.  My friend Julia, also a mac’n’cheese lover, joined us at our first restaurant we’re trying and we developed a super serious, totally flawless mac’n’cheese judging system.  Four categories, max score of 5 noodles out of five per category.  Whichever contender comes out with the highest average score between us at the end of the year is declared the winner.

First contender: Victory Cafe.
First impression: this thing is a monster. It’s a huge serving and comes with salad and garlic bread.  Scores below.

Details: Victory Cafe is at 581 Markham Street (just south of Bloor).  Hours and menu can be found here.
