#84 – Surprise date planned by Adam

Adam planned his surprise date this week and took me to Cafe Belong (my all time favourite place in Toronto) for a lovely meal.  He also gets props for planning a surprise birthday dinner for me back in November, but said it didn’t count since it was a birthday.

#9 – Brickworks Pizza Night

Once a week throughout the summer, The Evergreen Brickworks has a pizza night.  Pizzeria Libretto comes out and makes pizza at the outdoor wood burning stove, there’s a bar, snacks; it’s all really delightful.  We went out for the very last one, which also happened to be TD’s Best of Summer Nights, so all the food was complimentary.  Totally awesome.  It was the perfect early Fall night, lots of delicious food.  And then, to make it completely perfect, we went to Cafe Belong for some outstanding drinks and dessert, not to mention incredible live music.  Once again The Brickworks/Cafe Belong worked it’s magic and it was the very best date night we’ve had post-Henry.

#59 – Take Sam’s parents to Cafe Belong

Oh boy, guys, are we ever slacking.  Little Henry has been on sleep strike since day one, and do I ever have a deep and real understanding why they use sleep deprivation as a form of torture.  We are slowly and surely chipping away at our list, but finding a second and a half to post is another thing altogether (this post brought to you by our newly acquired exersaucer).

Cafe Belong is our favourite restaurant in the city; no secret there, we’ve managed to get it on the list every year in a different way.  Ever since we discovered it, we’ve always said how much my parents would love it, but we never managed to get it organized (we took Adam’s parents there at some point).

So two weekends ago we enlisted my brother and his girlfriend to babysit (for those keeping count, that would be two baby-free outings in two weeks), and we all headed over for a lovely lunch.  We wandered the farmer’s market at the Brickworks first, and then had the usual exceptional lunch; great food, great service, great company.

#20 – Go to the Junction Flea

This Sunday was the opening weekend for the Junction Flea in the Brick Works. The Junction Flea operates at two different locations, which is new this year (I appreciate the sass they deliver when addressing whether they will change their name or not).  I broke the first rule of flea markets; don’t go expecting to find specific items.  We had a list (small, but it was still a list) of things we were looking for to add to the ongoing nursery decorating, so when I didn’t find anything, I was a disappointed.  Not in the Flea itself, which was really fun and had some interesting vendors; a great mix of antiques, vintage clothes, arts & crafts vendors and food (Augie’s Ice Pops is all I need to label an event a success).  I also was in fits over the adorable Detour Coffee RV.

The best thing about the new Brick Works location is everything else available once you’ve finished at the Flea; we had a delicious brunch at Cafe Belong (we might have mentioned once or twice how much we love it there), and then wandered through the shop indoors.

We ended up driving out to Innisfil to the Roadshow Antiques Mall out there and finding all the things on our nursery list, so all round a very successful day!  We’re looking forward to checking out the Junction Flea in the Stirling Road location sometime during the summer.

#95 – Dress up for a fancy night out

We are way more comfortable in jeans and t-shirts than being dressed up, so getting fancy for a night made it on the list.  Of course, as these things go, 2013 ended up being the year for love, and we went to eight weddings, so were dressed up a fair amount this year.

It was my birthday this weekend, which also happened to be the same day Adam flew to Paris for a business trip, so we celebrated last week at my favourite place; Cafe Belong.  We ordered the vegetarian communal menu again, and it was just as delicious as earlier in the year.  This post is supposed to be about us getting dressed up, but I’ve included photos of the food because, let’s face it, it’s way prettier than we are!

I can never say enough about Cafe Belong; the food, the service and the drinks are always exceptional!

#48 – Order the communal menu at Cafe Belong

Cafe Belong is my favourite restaurant in Toronto.  The food is amazing, focusing on local, seasonal and organic ingredients; service is always, always great and it’s in the Brick Works, which is one of my favourite places to explore.

Cafe Belong has two menu options for dinner; the standard menu (which is always amazing), or the Communal menu, a five course full evening meal served family style.  The specific menu is a mystery, as the chefs create it individually per night, per table.  The only thing they tell you is that you will get a dessert course and a cheese course, though sometimes they can be combined.  There is a vegetarian, meat or fish option.

Every course was a delicious surprise and we had an amazing evening enjoying every course and trying to guess what might be coming next.  First course was a trio of salads; second course was puffed rice and vegetables with a curried tomato broth; third course was stuffed peppers; fourth was a trio of cheeses with marinated raisins and apples, pickled artichoke leaves and carrot jelly; and we ended with an apple crumble with ice cream, ginger cookies and candied almonds.

Another highlight of the night was when Chef and owner Brad Long briefly stopped by our table, which caused a mild fangirl meltdown on my part.

ImageThe food is incredible, and the drink menu is equally as great.  Many creative in-house cocktail creations, a great beer list and an extensive wine list.

I had a Gingerbread Daiquiri; a Stonewall (rum, ginger simple syrup, apple cider & gingerbeer) and finished with a Rhubarb Punch (my favourite), which they made me off the Fall menu.  Again, just amazing service.

Adam had a Beau’s Bog Water, Muskoka Mad Tom IPA and an Amsterdam Boneshaker.Image

Details: Cafe Belong is found in the Evergreen Brick Works.  Menus, hours and reviews can be found here.  The Brick Works can be tricky to get to without a car, but there is a free shuttle that runs frequently from Broadview station, details here.
