#37 – Ride a tandem bike

After visiting the Butterfly Conservatory this weekend, we were headed to visit with Adam’s family, when we drove past a bike rental outpost that had a tandem bike out front, so of course we stopped and went for a ride.  So fun, but did take a bit to get the knack of it.   The person in the back (me) can’t see, doesn’t steer or brake, so basically has to give up control (not my strength).  The person in front (Adam) needs to communicate pretty well, since it’s one chain, and both riders need to pedal, or not, at the same time.  Overall, between this and our tandem log sawing, we’re basically covering couples therapy for the year.  We really liked it once we figured it out, and the trails around Niagara-on-the-Lake are amazing for biking.  So fun!

Details: The rental outpost was Zoom Leisure Bike Rentals (the same place we rented bikes from last year).  Information and rates from Zoom can be found here.

#24 – Do a wine tasting tour

For this one, we opted to rent bikes and do a self-guided tour.  My parents joined us (after our morning of kayaking), and we stopped at four wineries; Pellar Estates, Caroline Cellar, Pondview and Pillitteri Estates.   While we mostly enjoyed the wines we tasted, the biking was the part of our day we enjoyed the most.

Details: We rented our bikes from Zoom Leisure Bike Tours and Rentals, details here.  We had a great experience with them, and liked that they had a variety of bike styles so we could each picked what suited us best.

We stopped at Pellar Estates Winery, Caroline Cellar, Pondview Estate Winery, and Pillitteri Estates Winery.

#58 – Go kayaking

This one was fun.  We had booked in a full day in Niagara-on-the-Lake over the Labour Day weekend, full of kayaking, biking wine tours and fireworks, when my Dad called me and asked if there was something off our list they could join in on, so we invited them along.

We had a great time paddling up the Niagara River, looking at the river front houses, yachts, water-birds and occasionally meeting up for a floating conversation.  All in all, a delightful start to our day!

Details: We rented the kayaks from Niagara Kayak Rentals, details can be found here. Lisa was really great, and they have lots of flexibility with launch sites, rental length, etc.  The kayaks were in great shape and easy to use, and we would all definitely go back.

#31 – Summer picnic

Yesterday we hit up a number of farmer stalls in Niagara-on-the-Lake, so it seemed like the perfect time to go on a summer picnic in High Park with all our delicious treats.

Our picnic menu included;
Cherries and strawberries
Summer peas
Spanish Roasted Potato salad
Quinoa salad

All in all, it was delightful.

Details: The Spanish Roasted Potato Salad recipe (which was amazing) can be found here.
The quinoa salad is my invention based on a recipe I will likely not be able to find.  It’s quinoa, feta, peppers, red onions, cucumbers, olive oil, red wine vinegar and dried oregano.
